What is a privateer St. Lawrence River

A privateer is a man or ship under contract to a government, allowing them to attack.
A privateer is a man or ship under contract to a government, allowing them to attack enemy ships during wartime. Privateering is often described as “legal” piracy.
The Thousand Islands region has a rich history involving privateers. Throughout the War of 1812, privateering expeditions were sent out to capture British ships carrying provisions and supplies. Privateer expeditions departed from Clayton and Cape Vincent. They skipped from island to island and hindered the British from moving supplies through the key waters of the St. Lawrence River.

St.Lawrence River fishing

The muskie fishing action has picked up the past week. Perch are biting in 20 to 30 feet of water. Try fathead minnows. Northerns are also hitting in about 20 feet of water. Try using a Rapala Husky Jerk lure. Bass fishing has slowed. Salmon River
The river level is down to about 750 cubic feet per second, which isn’t too high or too low. Be careful about wading into the middle of the river or crossing. Fishing has picked up again with passing of the storm front and both salmon and steelhead continue to provide good action. Eggs, beads, and egg patterns are still working best. Live bait is always good near weed beds and shoals.

Northern Pike fishing St lawrence River

There are cold times during the open-water period that can be considered prime for big pike. Each month until the ice forms lasts from 10 to 14 days. Try pike fishing  before a water body turns over in the fall. During the pre-turnover period big pike come out of the deep water as the shallow water cools.  Target six to twelve feet deep. Use 3 or 4-inch spoon  red-and-white daredevil or red-and-yellow if yellow perch are present . Overcast days, use bright silver or gold spoons.

Use medium-weight bait casting gear with a 15-pound-test line and a 12-inch wire leader. The St. lawrence river can be Cold, and have windy days which are excellent for pike fishing with a yellow body lure. Large spinner baits are popular fall trolling lures. In discolored water use black spinner bait. Trolling covers more water and allows you to find fish faster.

Fishermen can try backtrolling slowly over the vegetation, with 25 to 35 feet of line out. Backtrolling allows more depth control. Position the line at a 45-degree angle towards the water with a lure set just above the vegetation.  when you see an opening in the weeds, drop the rod tip and let the lure settle into it. Use polarized sunglasses so you can see these pockets.Fishermen try spinnerbaits over the tops of the weeds while backtrolling.Pike will bite large suckers and shiners.

Crappie fishing St. Lawrence river

For best results create your crappie brush farms in three different depth locations. Mark your locations to sink brush in the shallows, mid depth locations, and deeper water. I would suggest you build and sink your artificial crappie structure in areas that are not accessed easily by other fisherman. Make sure you drop your brush when no fisherman are watching. If your honey hole gets a lot of fishing pressure the crappie may move out to other fishing locations. I always look for places that would not interest casual boaters. You are probably asking why? Well by using three different locations you create crappie honey holes for different parts of the fishing season. I you can find a spot where the bottom starts deep and gradually goes to shallows you can build your three locations inline. Just mark each location with a GPS point, that way you can come back again and again without wasting any precious fishing time. If you have young children this is an excellent way to get them interested in fishing. Kids are impatient, but if you take them to a honey hole where the action is almost instant, you will nurture their interest in a wonderful sport.
This technique will work no matter where you are located at. Crappie love brush and structure as their habitat no mater what part of the country you live in. Make sure you check with your local laws to find out what is legal to sink for structure.
When fishing for crappie we have all heard people say that patience pays when fishing. Unfortunately that is not correct when fishing for crappie.Crappie are a schooling fish and it is important to find these schools. So when your fishing for crappie it is very important to be on the move constantly to find the crappie schools.
When you locate a crappie hole your instinct tells us to get as close to the crappie as we can.The water is clearer however we have low water levels on the St. Lawrence river so far this year and fishing is great. The bass and pike are always looking to feed and make catching them easierer. Because the zebra mussels have cleared up the water, weed beds provide good cover for bass and pike, shoals offer good bass fishing this time of year. Both the largemouths and smallmouths are on the rocks and weed beds.

St.Lawrence River visiting Alexandria Bay

The St.Lawrence River is famous for small mouth and large mouth bass fishing. Both Alex Bay and Clayton downtown districts are designated by the U.S. Federal Registry as Historic with buildings and houses from the late 1800s. The entire area along the St.Lawrence river is where you can fish for northern pike, walleye and muskie. If you don't have a boat there are several marina's that rent out fishing boats. Fall fishing is great after the rive has quited down from the summer boat traffic.
Fisherman can buy bait and obtain their fishing licenses at the 1000 island bait store located near the 1000 island bridge to Canada. Many of the marina's also sell bait and fishing licenses. Also located near the bridge is the 1000 island winery which has a large selection of wines from the region. We visited there and purchased some very nice tasting wine.
Another great attraction is the Uncle Sam boat tour in Alexandria bay. There are several different tours you can take around the river and see all the different islands. Many of the island have homes owned by movie stars and millionaires from around the world. Make sure if you take a tour to visit Singer Castle on Dark Island there have been several movies shot in the castle.
Both Clayton and Alexandria Bay are located on the St. Lawrence River and a short distance across the river is Canada. If you decide to visit Canada make sure you have a current pass port.

St.Lawrence river Mary Island camping

If you want to get away from everyday life camping on Mary Island is the place to do it.
The north side of Mary island has some nice cliffs to dive off to go swimming in the St.Lawrence river.
Camping out on Mary Island State Park St.Lawrence river.
If you need to get away and camp then I would suggest Mary Island in
upstate New York .It is secluded and the only way to reach there is by boat.
Mary Island State Park is located across from Alexandria Bay New York. The camp sites are primitive with no running water or electric. This makes it great to
get back to nature.
Mary Island is beautiful and secluded even though Alexandria bay is just a mile away across the
St.Lawrence river, with plenty of stores and restaurants.
You need to take plenty of light weight camping gear a tent, a
sleeping bag, a cooler with ice and dining utensils along with food and water to get you set up to camp. There are bathrooms but make sure to take along plenty of toilet paper.
You can set camp on the high point just off the docks on the north side
of the island the sunsets are breathtaking. After you set up your tents make sure to keep all food in a chest or inside the tents. The squirrels just love to get into the food if your away. This can happened and they will eat all your food.Take extra batteries and fuel for your lanterns. There is a charge for docking and camping which is collected. Singer castle St.Lawrence River

The Drawing Room features elk, caribou, deer and moose mounted on the four walls. A picture on one of the walls tips back so the host could watch from the secret passageway. Different grates were hidden in the walls and were used by servant's to watch the millionaire guests, and as rumor has it to signal to the owner what cards the players had when playing poker.
Singer Castle is the only castle on the river to be completed, it is fully furnished and resided in. The Castle remained in the possession of the original Bourne family from its construction in 1905 until the mid 1960's.

Singer castle is complete with dungeons, turrets, labyrinths, and many secret passageways. Singer castle was designed by Ernest Flagg for Singer Sewing Machine Company president Frederick Bourne. There are many different room to see and enjoy with antiques and valuables.
A dozen guests or more would stay at Singer Castle and each guest would have 2 or 3 servants assigned to them it was truly for the rich and famous.

Small mouth bass fishing off Carleton Island,St.Lawrence River

Small mouth bass fishing off Carleton Island located in the St Lawrence River in upstate New York. It was the location of Fort Haldimand, controlled by the British during the American Revolution, and of great strategic importance, as well as being a center of shipbuilding. The ruins of the fort can still be seen at the southwest end of the island. Projecting from the location of the fort is Government Point, notched by two small bays. Houses on the island are serviced by ferry from the mainland, the nearest town being Cape Vincent, New York.

My son and I were fishing in forty feet of water off the green buoy down river from Carleton Island . We both hooked a small mouth bass at the same time. When we got the bass to the boat we had both hooked the same bass. I forgot to take a picture but have never seen one bass hit two different lines at the same time.

St.Lawrence River shore dinner

Shore dinners are famous with the fishing guides on the St.Lawrence river.
While the group digs into the freshest fish they have ever eaten and the corn and potatoes, the guide begins preparations for dessert. Eggs are broken into a bowl and sugar and cream are added. The batter is used for bread that has been drying in the sunlit breeze for about an hour. Thrust into the rolling hot fat-back grease, the batter immediately puffs up, making the French toast resemble the finest French puff pastry. The French toast is served on the clean bottom of the upside-down plates that were used for the meal. It is topped with butter, a bottle cap of maple syrup, a bottle cap of cream and bottle cap of brandy, with strict directions "not to let your cap spill over."

While this is devoured, a second issue is prepared for those wanting another. All of this is topped off with the brew locally known as "guides coffee". Strong and dark, it is a necessity for those wishing to stay awake for the ride back to the dock.

While the bass may be both larger and more abundant bass are still found in the same areas discovered and fished by the fishing guides and experienced fishermen. In the St. Lawrence river, many fishing spots include the Lake of the Isles, Goose Bay, Chippewa Bay, and the rocky coves, shoals and points around the Admiralty Islands. Live bait is a good choice drifted over the rocks and shoals and along weed beds. The St Lawrence river is between northern New York and Ontario. St.Lawrence river in upstate New York Bass Fishing

I have fished for bass in the St.Lawrence river all my life. The St.Lawrence river in upstate New York is one of the best bass and pike fishing rivers in the world.Bass and pike fishing from Alexandria Bay to Clayton New York is great as long as you know where to fish.

Lets start with finding the smallmouth bass. You can ask some of the local fisherman or try and find them yourself.I  suggest that your boat is equipped with a fish finder or depth finder. The first places to check out are shoals that are about15 to 30 feet below the surface with deep water off there edges. You want to anchor your boat upriver to the shoal, upriver meaning the current is heading downriver toward the ocean. The St Lawrence river is full of shoals and a good topo map can help in locating them. The bass are deep in August and September, shallow in late June and July as the water warms up the bass will move to deeper water. One thing to remember is that the St.Lawrence river has very clear water so light line is a must.Smallmouth bass prefer swift water around rocks and shoals while largemouth bass in the St.Lawrence river tend to stay shallow around weed beds and lily pads.
How to rig your fishing pole is important.Use a small to medium hook with a light split shot sinker, 6 to 8 pound line on a medium action pole.We do not use snap swivels but tie the line to the hook its best to use doubly gut hooks. The sinker should be about 3 feet up the line from the hook to give the live bait, night crawler or minnow plenty of room to move around along the bottom. You make your cast upriver and let the bait sink and bounce along the top of the shoal. You must cast upriver this is key.The deeper the spot you are fishing might require a heaver split shot sinker.

St.Lawrence river small mouth bass fishing

Smallmouth often prefer outrageously colored topwaters, including chartreuse and orange. More about lure colors.

Always have a follow-up bait lure for missed strikes (such as grubs, gitzits and worms). Sometimes a bass will strike at a top water several times without connecting. When this happens, a plastic worm or jig immediately cast to the same area will often hook the fish.
Fish most top waters with a fine-wire cross-locking snap. Minnow baits are especially prone to sluggish action without them.
Lightweight wooden top waters including minnows should be fished on light line for greater casting distance and improved action. Lures with violent action such as stick baits should be fished on 12 or 14 pound test line, which will provide the right action without tangling in the lures hooks.
Sometimes no action is the best action. A simple minnow lure or stick bait allowed to sit still for long periods can produce a strike. St.Lawrence river small mouth will be in shallow water this time of year

St.lawrence River fishing weed beds

Weed beds and structure, such as sunken islands or steep drop offs near shoals, these are a great to start fishing on a lake or river that is new to you. These are areas that hold baitfish and pike and bass will stay near this type of cover.
If you are new to an area along the river, the best advice is to move up near other fishermen, Or talk to bait shops about hot fishing spots. They hear all the latest fishing spots from anglers buying minnows and other baits.
You can also purchase depth charts of the river which will show drop offs and structure that might hold fish. Charts can be found in most bait shops. Deep water off drop offs or near weed beds can be productive for pike seeking warmer waters or for bass to hide looking to feed on bait fish.

Niagara falls

They also offer the Maid of the Mist boat cruise which will take you to the whirlpools and bottom of Niagara falls. The water flow on the American side of the falls is much less in strength because of Goat Island, whereas Horseshoe Falls has no obstruction to divert it. The view of Niagra and Horseshoe falls is breathtaking. Be prepared to get soaked and keep your cameras covered. Continue reading about the falls.

St. Lawrence Seaway

Lower-than-normal water levels in the Montreal area of the St. Lawrence Seaway are forcing oceangoing container ships to lighten their loads, exacerbating an already tight capacity situation, the Canadian International Freight Forwarders Association said in a notice to members this wee
The low water levels, a result of a light winter snowfall and a dry spring in the Quebec region, prompted the U.S. and Canadian management agencies to lower the maximum draft for oceangoing ships on the waterway by 3 inches, to 26 feet, 3 inches, effective May 7.
Hapag-Lloyd notified the CIFFA this week that it was “revising its vessel capacities accordingly, and regrets that this may lead to some inconvenience” for customers. It said it was “investigating alternative routings.”

The Thousand Islands region

The Thousand Islands region is a watery venue of rocky, forested islands straddling two nations and marking the beginning of the storied St. Lawrence River as it leaves Lake Ontario to flow hundreds of miles northeast into the Atlantic Ocean in eastern Quebec.
Some of the Thousand Islands – officially they number 1,864 – are mere rocks with a couple of trees, too small for habitation, though some hold a single cabin. Others are large enough for many cottages, and busy Wellesley Island contains a Victorian village, several state parks, a golf resort and hundreds of summer homes. The largest, Ontario's charming Wolfe Island, supports a year-round farming population of nearly 1,500.

St. Lawrence River Water levels

Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, according to a letter addressed Thursday to IJC's U.S. Section chairwoman, Irene B. Brooks.
"Currently, water levels at Ogdensburg and Alexandria Bay are more than 21 inches lower than previous years' levels. "There is a growing likelihood of fairly low water levels this summer, and these below-average levels are already negatively impacting local businesses."

Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York

Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York deserves its name. Each of the long, slender bodies of water forms a striking resemblance to the fingers of a hand. Depending upon who you ask, however, the story of how the lakes came into existence can be as varied as the lakes themselves.

The smallmouth fishing is good but under utilized throughout the Finger Lakes system. Catches can average better than two pounds per bass, which is good smallmouth fishing even in the most famous smallmouth fisheries around the country. Finger Lakes offering this action include Owasco, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Honeoye, Canadice, Hemlock and Conesus. Three others, Skaneatles, Cayuga and Otisco, are not open for bass fishing during the winter season. The eight Finger Lakes open for winter bass fishing (Owasco, Seneca, Keuka, Canandaigua, Honeoye, Canadice, Hemlock and Conesus) are located in upstate New York, just west of Route 81

Catfish blood bait

Catfishermen have long made or bought blood baits to tempt persnickety fish. Almost any mammal or bird blood will work, but most anglers use chicken or beef blood obtained from meat processing plants.
To make your own blood bait, pour half an inch of blood in a shallow pan, then refrigerate or pack in cracked ice until the blood coagulates. The thickened blood is then cut into chunks and stored in a suitable container. When needed, a piece is pinched off and threaded on a hook.
Blood attracts cats quickly over long distances. Blood also keeps indefinitely when frozen. Bait can be thawed and refrozen as needed. Blood bait's most serious drawback is poor "hook ability" it won't stay on a hook very well. Try wrapping the blood bait in a small square of nylon stocking, pull the four corners together, then thread the hook through the corners, leaving the point uncovered.

Sutton readily acknowledges that other baits are effective on channel catfish. "If you're catching catfish on a bait not discussed here, stick with it. But when other baits fail to produce, give fish, blood bait, nightcrawlers and catalpa worms a try."Catfishermen Click Here!

Northern pike Walleye Fishing St.Lawrence River

Spawning habitat for northern pike in the St.Lawrence river, primarily shallow wetlands, have been depleted because of changing water levels following the construction of various dams along the river.Northern Pike/Walleye
Northern pike fishing can be enjoyed almost year-round. In winter, ice fishermen take good catches from bays near Cape Vincent, Clayton, Wellesley Island, Alexandria Bay, Wheat house Bay (downstream from Ogdensburg) and Coles Creek using tip-ups with large minnows. During spring, shallow weedy bays and shoals are places where northern pike anglers do well. As a rule, bays that provided action for ice fishermen will do the same for open water anglers. In addition to those areas already mentioned, the Bays of Grindstone Island, Grasse Point, Goose Bay and off Oak Point are also good spots during spring and summer. Trolling or casting with live bait (especially minnows and shiners), large spoons and large plugs as well as jigging with black or yellow jigs will bring in good catches.

Zebra mussels have helped change the water quality of the river, resulting in clearer water, while removing vital nutrients, as well as the smaller organisms that fish consume.

WELLESLEY ISLAND

Across the Thousand Islands bridge to Wellesley Island from Alexandria Bay, anglers will find a number of popular places for northern pike this month.
Eel Bay and Lake of the Isles are two public areas where anglers can go from the boat launch straight to decent fishing conditions. These waters are shallow with a sandy bottom and hold good quantities of perch and sunfish, which lure pike to the areas.
Eel Bay is off the bridge near the state boat launch. Lake of the Isles is near the Minna-Anthony Nature Center on the island.

Fishing for muskie in the St.Lawrence river off Clayton New York

Fishing for muskie in the St.Lawrence river off Clayton New York. There are public boat ramps to launce your boat. If you are not familiar with the area for musky fishing I would suggest you hire a experienced musky fishing guide. May 2 is the opening day for musky fishing but the best fishing is in the fall going into winter. It can be very cold on the St.Lawrence river fishing for musky so dress warm. More fishing for muskies include the down stream sides of any of the deep water shoals off the islands between Cape Vincent and Clayton.

I like to drift the deep water shoals of Clayton using a heavy fishing rig baitcasting tackle spooled with 30-pound test line or stronger and a wire leader, muskie can bite through regular fishing line. If you can find them at the local bait store a 6 to 10 inch sucker hook through the mouth is a great musky killer. I like to use a 1/2 ounce sinker placed about 3 feet above the hook to let the sucker swim around. Using a fish finder find the shoals that are next to deep water the muskies lay along the rock shoals and feed on bait fish like a sucker. Trolling a large sucker bait is also good for muskie anglers because you can cover more water and increase the chances of a strike from a muskie. Practice catch and release.

How to care for your fishing lures and baits

Fishing lures in general do not require much care when storing them in a home or shop or a good tackle box. The best way is to put them into cabinet drawers or individual boxes so that they can be found and stay dry. In humid climates or near the seashore it is important not to expose the metal parts to the air, otherwise, hooks will rust and other metals will corrode from the salt air.

You should keep fishing lures that have feathers or hair they should be kept in airtight containers so that moths and other insects or small animals will not get to them. This also applies to new fishing lures that haven't yet been used. Lures which have been used require proper care if you want to get the maximum use from them when you go fishing. Freshwater fishing lures will require less care and repair than saltwater lures.
In general, when examining any fishing lure you have made or bought it's a wise policy to repair it if you are the least bit doubtful about its condition for a good presentation to fish. Repairing usually means sandpapering the part of the lure body that is slightly chipped and touching up with a small brush, using enamels or lacquers.

You should replace the hooks with new ones if they are badly rusted. When doing this it is important to use the same size and weight as the old ones so that the action of the fishing lure is not changed in any way. If the damage is great and the lure cannot be repaired, throw it away after salvaging any usable parts.

Lake of the Isles St. Lawrence River

Lake of the Isles on the St. Lawrence River is one of the largest coastal bay inland water attached to the St. Lawrence River. This water is
very unique in the river area because of its limited connection to the St. Lawrence River, creating a unique sheltered and productive fishing area. This is a great area for boating and fishing.
First you need to travel to upstate New York to Alexandria bay. The lake of the Isles is a short boat trip across from Alex bay. You will find that
Lake of the Isles St. Lawrence River has outstanding bass fishing for locals and traveling bass fishinermen. You should fish the large beds of lily pads and weed banks. The area is out of the strong winds that blow up the waves and make it tough to fish for bass. Move along the shoreline areas there are many down trees and tree limbs, which creates great fishing for catching largemouth bass.

Singer Castle St.Lawrence river
